Cooking with Cannabis

A brief introduction to edibles and examining benefits/risks of homemade products
Edibles have become one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis, offering a smoke-free option with long-lasting effects. When you eat cannabis-infused products like brownies, gummies, or chocolates, the body processes the THC differently than when you smoke it. The result is often a more intense, long-lasting high that can last anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. However, with homemade edibles, there are some risks to be aware of, particularly when it comes to dosing.
One of the main benefits of making your own edibles is that you can control the ingredients and potency. Whether you’re baking cookies or preparing cannabis-infused butter (cannabutter), homemade edibles allow for creativity and customization. However, the downside is that getting the dosage right can be tricky. Eating too much THC too quickly can lead to an uncomfortable high, and since edibles take longer to kick in—up to two hours in some cases—it’s easy to overconsume.
Recipe and instructions for cannabutter
Cannabutter is a key ingredient in many homemade edibles, and it’s relatively simple to make. Here’s a basic recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup ground cannabis (about 7-10 grams, decarboxylated)
Instructions:
- Decarboxylate your cannabis: This is an essential step. Preheat your oven to 240°F and spread your ground cannabis on a baking sheet. Bake for 40-50 minutes. This process activates the THC.
- Melt the butter: In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the decarboxylated cannabis.
- Simmer the mixture: Let the butter and cannabis simmer for 2-3 hours. Be sure the mixture stays on low heat (not boiling) to avoid destroying the cannabinoids.
- Strain and store: After simmering, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth into a jar or container. Let it cool before sealing and refrigerating.
You can use this cannabutter in any recipe that calls for butter—from cookies to sautéed vegetables. Just remember to start with a small amount and give yourself plenty of time to feel the effects before consuming more.
